St. Michael & All Angels Church, Blackheath

Architect: Thomas Ford & Partners

St Michael’s is a Church of England church in Blackheath and is a Grade 2* Landmark Georgian building, built in the Gothic Revival style. The spire is a landmark on the Blackheath skyline, and it is known locally as ‘The Needle of Kent’. The church required extensive repair and restorations to the exterior, and modernisation / adaptations to the interior, including:

  • Extensive external masonry work, including repairs to the Tower and Spire
  • Repairs to finials, pinnacles, gargoyles and stone copings
  • General brickwork repairs and roof slate replacement
  • Replacement of rainwater goods and leadwork
  • State of the art interior lighting
  • Underfloor heating system
  • Improved disabled access
  • New glass doors
  • Relocation of the pulpit
  • Complete interior redecoration sensitive to the original interior
  • An upgraded audio-visual system
  • New font and cupboards

Funds were raised over a four-year period largely through gifts from members of the congregation, fundraising events and a number of grants from various bodies.

Works began on site in October 2017 and finished in September 2018. The church is now available to the wider community and can host concerts, lectures, classes, events and exhibitions, as well as regular worship-based services.

D.R.Nolans were proud to provide full QS services on this project.
